How do I drive more traffic to my website?

gain more website traffic
Get more web traffic!
We all have the same goal... Getting a flood of traffic to our website so we can get our products sold.  Let's face it, without traffic a website can be a big waste of time and money.   I have spent countless hours on sites, in my earlier days, thinking that I would have a plethora of traffic as soon as I got my website published, just because there are millions online at any given time.  I was pretty disappointed to only get a few hits a day even after months of my website being up.  Well let me share with you some tips I have learned both from trial and error as well as research.

  •   Content content content!  I place this at the top of the list for several reasons.  If your site has nothing to offer your visitors you can't expect them to stay long.  You most certainly can't expect them to come back either.  When search engines are crawling the web, and ranking your site in their directory the main thing they look for is quality content.  If they are going to send people to your page it's like a referral.  They're not going to refer their searchers to pages with no quality content.  In fact one of the things that can hurt you in Google's ranking is if visitors hit the back button soon after clicking on your page.  This is a sure way to gain traffic to your website.  If your website has quality content, then you can expect return traffic.
  • Relevant content for your website! Make sure your page title, meta tags, page content, header description are all in line with what is really on your site.  Lets say your site only sales top of the line imported rugs, but you've filled your meta tags with every keyword you can think of that relates to rugs, carpet, floor, mats, etc.  A person searching for cheap door mats clicks on your page after doing a search, realizes quickly your site is not what he is looking for.  He hits the back button and moves on.  This can hurt you in the long run with search engines.  They want to see your keywords are relevant to your site.
  • First impression.  Most visitors to your website will only look around for 15 -20 sec. before they move on.  You only have that much time for your front page to convince them that your site has what they are looking for.  Make your site clean and easy to navigate.  To much clutter leaves more for a visitor to have to sift through and they may leave if they can't find the product they want or at least the link to it.
  • Links.  Another thing search engines look at, is how many other sites have links to your site.  The fastest way to get links is visiting other site that offer the service like this one and post a link.  One way links are the best.  You can also visit other site that are similar to yours and email a request that you share links.  This is called a reciprocal link.  It's not the best type of link that search engines look at, but it wont hurt you in their rankings either.  However, this type of link is the best at getting non search traffic because you will be getting clicks from people that were at a site similar to yours, so they will already be in the mood to look at what you have to offer.
  • Pay Per Click.   This is not a new trend, but one that has gotten popular.  It can really pay off if done right, and get you a lot of internet traffic, but it can also be a big waist of money if your keywords are not up to par.  Pay per click is basically bidding on the keywords that people search for in an effort to be ranked at the top of the search results.  Have you seen the ads at the top of the search result page and the one's down the right side.  These ads appear as a result of the keyword that was searched for.  The ones at the top are the ones that bid the highest for that word.  It sounds complicated but it's not.  Google, Yahoo, and Bing are the top three.  You only pay when someone clicks on your ad.  Your ad may appear in hundreds of search results but you only pay if someone clicks on your ad and gets sent to your site.  The cost can be anywhere from a few cents to over a dollar per click.  The best part is you are in control over how much you pay per click, and how much you will pay total per day.  You can set a budget of .10 cents per click with a limit of 3 dollars a day or 10, depending on what your budget is.  When you sign up for this service they will walk you through the steps one at a time and make it easy to understand.  To get to the right place just search for Google ppc, or Yahoo ppc, etc.  As I said earlier be careful with the keywords you bid on.  If you only sale top quality imported rugs, don't bid on search keywords like "door mats", or "floor coverings", or "bargain carpets".  You will be spending money on clicks from people going to your site that are not looking for what you have to sale.  Instead bid on words like "Quality imported rugs", "Asian rugs for sale" these keywords not only get you the right customers, but customers looking to buy.
  • Blog sites, Forum sites.  One of the most searched for items on the web is information.  That is why these sites are great for increasing your internet traffic.  Today you can find information on anything and not have to pay for it.  Because of this people wont pay for it.  You can start a blog site or join several free blog sites that let you write blogs.  In your blog about quality imported carpets and why they are superior, you can post a link to your page.  Join forums that have to do with what you are selling.  Make contacts, answer questions others may ask about your type of products and from time to time refer them to your site.  Good luck in your quest.  We are all in this together with the same goal. So the way I see it, lets help each other out. Information should be shared, there is plenty to go around for everyone.
